Find Out Why Cold Storage Containers are Ideal for Seafood Distributors

Cold storage containers are intended to be used almost continuously.  They can be loaded with fresh seafood for a new destination soon after having emptied its previous cargo.  They can also be used for on-site processing. Cold storage containers are great for fresh or frozen fish and seafood items that must be stored and maintained at a specific temperature for storage and transportation.

A successful distributor must excel in all varieties of seafood. You must have the ability to process and provide an assortment of fresh and frozen fish and other seafood to your customers.

By having expedient access to add-on or on-site cold storage, you can beat your competitors and provide “high grade”, quality seafood.

By providing high quality seafood to your customers, it enables them to do the same for their customers.  High quality seafood products are the goal of any grocery store, market, hotel, restaurant or café.  For those places that choose to offer and serve seafood and fish, it is essential to have the best product possible. Unless the restaurant or store is located near the ocean or large body of water, they have to work with distributors and wholesalers to receive their products.

You must have the ability to keep your product cold or frozen as soon as possible after it reaches your facility.  Our cold storage containers allow you to be more flexible with your inventory.  They can help eliminate the need for operating out of a dedicated distribution center or making costly capital expenditures on walk-in coolers or freezers.

How Portable Refrigeration Will Help Store Your Wine and Beer

Wine & Beer

Refrigerated containers are an excellent alternative to costly, purpose-built walk-in freezers or cellars. These containers are portable and can be delivered to your location and ideal for beer and wine that has to be stored and maintained at specific temperatures.

Wine and many beers benefit from extended aging. We’re not talking about your average beer with a mere shelf life of 3-6 months but beers that beg for maturation and strict storage like vintage beers, barleywines, imperial stouts, Belgian strong ales, lambics, old ales and so on. Ideally, any type of beer that can be laid-down for a year or two, or even more, in order to build a slew of complexities and thus further its character in a positive way. Wine and beer need storage that is dark, cool, humid, free from vibrations, and a cold storage unit can duplicate that!

Wine and Beer Storage and Serving Temperatures
A cool temperature ranging from 55 – 57 degrees Fahrenheit is considered to be optimal for the biochemical development that occurs as fine wines mature. Beer benefits from cool constant temperatures; usually around 50-55 degrees F is ideal for most beers. Higher temperatures and you’ll risk shortening the lifespan of your wine and beer.

Darkness
Ultraviolet rays penetrate wine bottles and cause the tannins to oxidize, resulting in irreparable damage to fine wine. And beer is best away from direct light, and sources of heat.

Humidity
Maintaining the right humidity of 50-70% inside the storage container is important for the optimal storage and aging of wine and beer. When conditions are too dry, the corks (both beer and wine) can become brittle and shrink, thereby allowing wine inside the bottle to oxidize. When conditions are too humid, wine and beer labels can become damaged and mold can grow inside the cabinet.

Environment & Vibration
Clean air is vital for the preservation and storage of wine and beer, when the “cellar doors” are closed, the environment is sealed to protect and preserve the beer and wine inside. And it minimizes the movement of the bottles while they are being stored and aged.

Lastly just like wines, some beers age very well, others don’t. Some beers need only a year, while others can age for 25+ years. A portable storage storage container can be converted into a great wine and beer cellar. Best of all, you can buy it for long term storage or lease for a temporary solution.

Portable Refrigerated Storage vs. Static Cold Storage/Cold Storage Warehouses

Portable refrigerated storage containers/trailers and static storage/warehouse space are two viable solutions for temporary or long term cold storage.  One of the key decisions to make when considering your cold storage options, are whether you should utilize a portable refrigeration storage container/trailer or choose a static option.

The Benefits of Portable Cold Storage Units

Portable cold storage units can be delivered and moved anywhere that your business requires.  This could be beneficial when you have too much inventory, have a special promotion or decide to move premises.  Static refrigeration units/warehouses would make things significantly more difficult and costly.  Your product is handled less; reducing the risk of spoilage or damage as well.

Portable refrigerated storage is efficient and convenient.  Long term rental contracts are not a requirement.  You return the unit when you are done.  Portable units can be leased for as long necessary, as opposed to buying a static unit outright.

Avoid the hassle of loading items into your vehicle, driving them to an off-site cold storage facility and then unloading your product again.  Portable refrigerated storage containers/trailers are brought directly to your site.

There are definite benefits to choosing portable refrigeration over static cold storage.  A portable refrigerated container/trailer simply makes more sense.

Refrigerated Storage- Do I Need It?

Are you collector, do you run a gallery or a special storage facility? Here’s some information on the most common collectibles and how they benefit from refrigerated storage.

Art and Paintings

How to make art last for centuries?  Sometimes it is necessary to store art and paintings in proper climates.  Doing so can prevent fading, discoloring or cracking.  These things can happen if the pieces are exposed to extreme light, heat or cold.  Refrigerated or temperature controlled storage can help safeguard them and extend their longevity.

Using refrigerated or temperature controlled storage can help protect and maintain the value and condition of your art collection. Different types of paintings (oil or canvas) can benefit from being stored in a temperature controlled environment.

Furniture Storage

There are three basic types of furniture storage – dry storage/not temperature controlled storage, air conditioned storage and climate controlled storage.

Dry storage is usually the most affordable; however your furniture can become damaged due to extreme temperatures and temperature fluctuations.

Air conditioned storage is best if you live in a hot climate with low humidity and relatively seasonal winters.  It may not be ideal if you live in an area that experiences harsh winters.

The best type of storage for furniture is climate controlled storage.  Climate controlled storage (within a specific temperature range), may also provide humidity control as well.  Climate controlled storage can aid in extending the life of your furniture, as well as save on furniture repair costs and possible furniture replacement costs.

Fabrics

Textiles that are displayed in both homes and public buildings are subject to deterioration by many environmental factors.  High temperatures, excessive heat and high humidity accelerate the deterioration of textiles.  They factor in contributing to a desirable climate for insects, mold and mildew.Textile collections (costumes to quilts) in museums and galleries need protection from deterioration.  Temperature controlled storage makes it possible.  Textiles like a buffalo robe, furs or feathers also benefit from cooler temperatures.  Wool as a material does better in cooler temperatures as well.

Generally all textiles are safe in colder or cooler environments as they have a tendency to deteriorate more quickly.

When considering how to store or preserve your valuables…consider using a refrigerated storage container.  Money spent up front may save you money down the road!

Temperature Controlled Storage for Pharmaceuticals and Biomedical Products

Today’s medical needs include safe methods of storage for items such as blood and various tissue samples for testing purposes.  These must be handled antiseptically as well as stored at specific temperatures.  They cannot simply be stored in a typical residential freezer or refrigerator.  No matter the sample, it most likely needs to be stored in a controlled environment and saved for some future purpose.  The medical refrigeration equipment needs to be securely locked to prevent any malicious contamination or theft.

Prevent inactive vaccines, harmful safety issues and inaccurate clinical trial results! Laboratories, Hospitals and Clinical Research Organizations need and use temperature controlled storage to maintain integrity of their research and materials.

There are biological standards by which all such materials must be handled and stored in order to assure the safety and the quality of any medical related materials.  The correct climate controlled containers for storing vaccines are absolutely vital.  Samples stored improperly may lead to the vaccines becoming useless.  People cannot be vaccinated and money is wasted. Good practices, policies, procedures and climate controlled containers are needed to ensure that vaccines are stored at the correct temperature.

For controlled purposes there are various classifications of storage.  They are generally classified by temperature and/or humidity within a secure controlled environment:

  • Preventative conservation storage insures dust free, temperature controlled; secure storage for items ranging from collectibles to medical tissue samples and blood.
  • Stability storage may include walk in size storage containers such as freezers and refrigerated areas that require temperature control.  They offer long term storage of items such as blood plasma and body tissue, pharmaceutical supplies or quarantined materials.
  • Moderate or ambient temperature storage generally has moderate temperature control in the range of sixty degrees centigrade down to negative two degrees centigrade.  Many pharmaceutical items, solvents, dry materials, nasal sprays, tablets and capsules will store well at this medical refrigeration grade temperature.
  • Low temp storage from negative two degrees centigrade down to around negative sixty degrees centigrade considered ideal for food products such as meat, nitrate film, toxins, and pharmaceuticals.  Humidity can be controlled variably.

Portable storage units are secure and can be locked assuring that the temperature remains at the designated controlled level.  They will store and preserve  substances critical to human life for long periods of time.

Drug products must be shipped and stored in a manner that does not risk exposure to temperatures outside of their recommended storage conditions; potentially impacting the safety and effectiveness of the drug product.  Environmental controls play a key role in maintaining drug quality.  Temperature is one of the most important parameters to control.

WAREHOUSING AND STORAGE

All drugs should be stored according to conditions described on the label.  When specified on the label, controls for humidity, light, etc. should be in place.  Refrigerated containers used to store drugs should:

• be well maintained

• be equipped with alarms

• be free from frost buildup

The transport process and containers should prevent damage and maintain the integrity and quality of the drug products.  For example, ampoules exposed to physical stress could develop hairline cracks.  Within a transportation container, the packaging configuration which provides the primary means of environmental control for the drug product should ensure that the drug product remains within the acceptable temperature range.

When investing in climate controlled containers to store your medical supplies vaccinations or pharmaceuticals, it is highly advisable to work with a company that is experienced and knowledgeable in providing refrigerated storage equipment suited for the pharmaceutical industry.

What size container do you need?

Here are some tips for picking the right fit.

Now that you have decided you need a refrigerated container, size is the next question. There are some basic questions you can ask yourself that will help you to choose the right size.

First, what is a refrigerated container?

Refrigerated containers are actually shipping containers that are able to control temperature and thus allow all sorts of different products (food, chemicals, paint etc) to travel across the country, world, or sit on location.  The “refrigerated container” name can be a bit misleading as the temperature can be controlled within a range of below 0°F to 75°F depending on the product requirements.  Sometimes they are referred to as reefer containers or ambient temperature containers.  Whatever you call them, they come in 2 sizes: 20ft and 40ft.

Storage containers have become a very popular means of providing extra space, outbuildings, short term and long term storage solutions. Most small businesses, contractors and residential users choose 20′ containers since they provide access take up less space and do not require as much room for delivery as the 40′ containers. 40′ models provide almost three times as much storage space but also require three times as much space to deliver. It is also important to check with your city or county to make sure there is not a container size restriction in your area.

These units are specifically designed for outdoor use but can just as easily be placed inside your warehouse for indoor use. They are extremely rugged and well suited for harsh environments.

Four important questions to ask before deciding to rent or buy a container:

  • How long will you need the container?
  • Is the location adequate to host the container?
  • How much space do you need?
  • How much weight can the container hold?

Here are some charts on containers to help you decide:

PRS Container Chart

Once you have all the answers to your needs regarding use, location, length and logistics, then the right container is delivered to your location and you can immediately put it to use. Most of the containers are ground level.  You can simply open the doors and walk in to the unit.

Refrigerated Shipping Containers

Why are they called reefers?

Refrigerated shipping containers are often called reefers.  A reefer is defined as “a refrigerator (especially one large enough to be walked into), a refrigerator car, ship or truck.”  Reefers play an important role in global trade.  They allow companies to ship items such as fruits, vegetables, dairy products and other items requiring refrigeration while in transit.  Reefers ensure goods are shipped at the optimal temperature, humidity and ventilation levels needed for the product they are transporting.  Reefer containers are generally fitted with individual refrigeration units that hook in directly with the cargo or reefer ships’ electrical supply.  Refrigerated container vessels are specifically designed to allow for the transport of individual refrigerated container units and they are usually found in special areas of the ships cargo hold.  Some modern ships contain water cooling systems and some reefers are fitted with redundant cooling systems to ensure perishable cargo is not spoiled due to a refrigeration unit going bad.

Reefers are not just for ships or transport, they are the perfect solution for ground or dock level temperature controlled storage.  Reefers can maintain temperatures ranging from below 0°F to 75°F making them the perfect fit for any business requiring temperature sensitive storage.  The containers are available in 20 ft and 40 ft lengths and electric powered.  Electric powered systems are more efficient as well as quieter than diesel powered units.  Our electric units do not release any harmful emissions, making them safer for the environment as well.  These containers are perfect for food manufacturers/distributors, grocery stores, schools, restaurants and hotels as well as the pharmaceutical/biomedical industry.  These units can be purchased or rented and are available for short or long term use as well as for seasonal rentals.
